Undoubtedly Islam is a divine religion comprising tenets, acts of worship and dealings
in conduct and statutory issues, and has its own conceptions and perspectives with
regard to ownership, freedom, justice, equality and the economic issue and distribution
of economic resources.
It is sufficient for a person to read the Holy Qur'an to realize that this religion
is designated to organize the affairs of the individual, society, and the State
in the various personal, familial, social, political and economic domains.
Likewise the Refined Sunnah (words, deeds and approvals) of Prophet Muhammad (Blessings
and peace of Allah be upon him) is saturated with illustration, detailing, elaboration
and manifestation of the articles that have been stated in the Qur'an, plus supplementations
that deal with various subjects for regulating the public and practical phases of
a Muslim’s life, and define the relations between individuals in Muslim societies
in conformity with disciplined parameters, which no sensible Muslim, who appreciates
his religion would deviate from.
Islamic systems, be they economic, social, moral or dogmatic, are strongly cohesive
and balanced, and stem from one source, represented in the dogma of monotheism which
is deeply rooted in the spirit of the Muslim, and which ramifies into different
branches characterized by strong and rational links; thus the awareness of the Islamic
spirit, objectives, roots, branches is a basic method of erecting the economic structure
in Islam.
The legitimization that distinguishes dealings in Islamic jurisprudence, gave a
free scope for the Islamic mentality to innovate, develop its living and subsistence
potentialities to cope up with the modern inventions of this century.
Whatever that has been restricted or prohibited is intended to serve the interest
of the Muslim and reform the sound society. Undoubtedly, the banning of liquor,
gambling, bribery, cheating, prejudice, injustice and acquisition with false means,
maintaining laborers’ rights, preventing disputes, and achieving justice and equality
and mutual agreements and faith in the justice of Allah the Almighty, and belief
in His fate and destiny, and ability to rely on Him together and simultaneously
seek the ways and means to realize your requirements; this behavior/ tendency promotes
production and puts the work course on the proper track of justice and co-operation.
But the remoteness of Muslims from their religion and their unawareness of its values
and teachings paved the way for the emergence of a usury stifling system that led
to the division of the world into two pavilions:
Money and power, and Weakness and defeatism.
The sky then got overcast with dark clouds on the Islamic nation and was shrouded
with Allah’s Anger because of the usury practice which is tantamount to fighting
Allah and His Apostle, and Allah the Almighty says in the Holy Qur'an:
“Ye who believe! Fear Allah, and give up what remains of your demand for usury,
if ye are indeed believers. If ye do it not, take notice of war from Allah and His
Apostle: But if ye turn back, ye shall have your capital sums: Deal not unjustly,
and ye shall not be deal with unjustly.” (Verse 278) Sura Baqara.
Thus the war waged by Allah and His Apostle is a herald of warning and danger that
threatens the existence of the Muslim nation from realizing the seriousness of this
offence, which destroys the cultivation and offspring and sows humility, lowliness
and inferiority. Nations, which worshipped substance and money, have adhered to
usury, and were able to excel us in equipment and ordnance, as result of which it
got aggravated with injustice, casteism and the domination of the rich over power
and influence. But the murky cloud began to scatter, after the prospects of Islamic
economic rules started to emerge, and float on the surface of the earth to constitute
vent for the distress, which has crouched on the breast of the Islamic nation, namely
usury, in its various forms.
The first prospects started to evolve between 1963 and 1966 in Saving Bank, Egypt
(Meet Ghamer) and this newborn managed to survive four years, till the birth of
Islamic banks was declared.
As from then, the rain drops continued to trickle by the grace of Allah, through
the emergence of banks and establishments that were committed to comply with the
Islamic Shari'a tenets in all their dealings and transactions, and has grown to
yield fruits for harvest and maintained its status till now. What calls for surprise
is the flocking of usury banks to establish branches and portfolios governed by
Shari'a regulations, the fact which puzzles and enhances faith and attachment to
Allah and affirms that this religion is comprehensive, eternal, and is eligible
for all times and places and satisfies the requirements and desires of the decent
Muslim.
“This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed my favour upon you,
and have chose for you Islam as your religion”.
The necklace set began to complete and the system started to be verified, till it
has evolved to a masterpiece that prompted appreciation and won full satisfaction
from all; the economic system is a harmonious combination of social and legal foundation
seeking to achieve the balance between production and consumption and between the
goods and the requirements.
For the sake of fairness and realism, we must confess that the Islamic mechanism
has some gaps in behaviour and performance not in origin and source as it is in
the stage of emergence and formation, and it is neither shameful or queer nor derogatory,
as it is analogous to swimming against the tide of usury, and as such it is exposed
to encounter difficulties and hurdles which is naturally blocking attainment to
the required target towards the prosperity of the Islamic state by depending on
Allah in the first place and by effort and accomplishment in the second place.
